There are basically 2 types of software that you can use, the first being a downloadable chat you run from your desktop and the second being webchat that you use on your website pages.

MIRC
There are several MIRC scripts available for you to install and run from your computer, the most popular one being MIRC itself, its been around for many years now and would be our preferred choice, we have done alot over the years with MIRC and are pretty familiar with adding custom features to it should you ever feel the need to have anything added to the original configuration.

Webchat
If you want to add webchat to your website so that you can offer your community a place for them to have a chat with one another, ideal if your a club or other organisation for example. Most java web chat software is easy to install and requires only a basic knowledge of HTML to configure.
